Principal investigator
Meghna Gupta is a tenure-track assistant professor at OHSU. She started the research group in February 2024. She received extensive experience in membrane protein structural biology using CryoEM and X-ray crystallography as a postdoctoral scholar and specialist in the Stroud lab at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). During this time she received a postdoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association (AHA) followed by a K99/R00 pathway to independence award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA)/NIH for her research on peroxisome biology.
Research Assistant Professor
Nitesh Kumar Khandelwal is a Research Assistant Professor in the department and associated with the Gupta lab. He began this position at OHSU in January 2025. Prior to this, he completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Arizona. His expertise lies in fungal pathogenesis and membrane protein structural biology.
Postdoctoral Scholar
Devin Seka is a postdoctoral scholar in the Gupta lab and started at OHSU in August of 2024. He received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Chatham University in Pittsburgh PA, prior to earning his PhD from the University of Arizona. During his time at U of A, Devin conducted research in the Tomasiak Lab, focusing on human and fungal membrane protein complexes, with an emphasis on protein structure and function. His expertise includes cell-based experiments, biochemical techniques, and structural analysis via cryogenic sample electron microscopy (CryoEM). At OHSU, Devin is currently investigating peroxisome formation and dysfunction.
Postdoctoral Scholar
Paras Kumar is a postdoctoral scholar in the Gupta Lab at OHSU, where he joined in July 2025. Before joining OHSU, he served as a Junior Specialist in the Stroud Lab at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He earned his Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, where his research focused on the structural and functional characterization of SLC26 transporters. He holds an M.Sc. in Microbiology from Banaras Hindu University and a B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Delhi, India. His research expertise spans yeast genetics, molecular biology, membrane protein purification, and single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (CryoEM). Paras is currently investigating the mechanisms of cellular proteostasis and protein quality control, with a specific focus on peroxisomal pathways.
NGP Rotation Student
Aayush is a rotating first-year student in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at OHSU (2026). He received bachelor's degrees in molecular biology and history of science from Johns Hopkins University. After graduating, he conducted research in the lab of Dr. Peter Calabresi, studying the relationship between oligodendrocyte precursor cells and T cells during inflammatory autoimmune disease. Aayush is interested in learning new biochemical and cell-based techniques to study peroxisomal biology in oligodendrocytes.
NGP Rotation Student
Sandra is a first-year rotation student in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at OHSU (2026). She earned her B.S. in Child and Adolescent Development with minors in Cell and Molecular Biology and Psychology at California State University, Fullerton. During Sandra’s rotation in the Gupta Lab, she looks forward to expanding her skills in molecular biology as well as functional and structural characterization techniques, such as cryo-electron microscopy, to better understand how Aquaporin-4 orthogonal arrays of particles are assembled.
Murdock Scholar
Nikki is a first-summer intern in the Murdock Scholars program (2026). She is attending Warner Pacific University, where she is pursuing a degree in biological science with a human biology emphasis. During her time in the Gupta Lab, she plans on building foundational research skills and learning a variety of techniques aimed at understanding the role of peroxisomes in cellular function.
Murdock Scholar
Vania Hernandez is a Murdock Scholar interning in the Gupta Lab (2025-2026). She is a student at Linfield University, majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in Physics. Through her academic training, she has developed a strong interest in biomedical sciences, particularly the molecular biology of pathological mechanisms in disease, with a focus on the potential role of biomarkers in diagnosis.
PBMS Rotation Student
Hayley rotated in the lab as part of the PBMS program in March 2026.
CBP-SURP Student
Ella is a summer intern in the Gupta Lab through the Chemical Physiology and Biochemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program (CPB-SURP). She is a member of the class of 2026 at St. Olaf College studying music and biomolecular science. In her free time, Ella enjoys spending time outside and doing crafts.
